Case Study – Penrith City Council

Penrith City Council is one of the largest Councils in the Sydney Metropolitan area, the 6th largest (by population) in NSW. 

The Council has many applications running across their network, which place a significant strain on their network resources. Tight capital budgets meant upgrading network cabling and bandwidth was not an option. Older printers needed replacing and they looked at a number of different manufacturers to fulfill their needs. Colour was included in discussions to improve the effectiveness of external, and also internal, communications.

TEST PHASE
During the evaluation a number of colour lasers were tested, two made it to the short-list. The Lexmark C720 and TallyGenicom T8006 models look similar from the outside (they use the same Hitachi engine), but the internal “smarts” are very different. TallyGenicom employs an advanced emulation, TCPL, to compress print files to a fraction of their normal size. This has three consequences - 
1. Network traffic is reduced by up to 70% 
2. First page out speed increases dramatically 
3. Memory in the printer is used much more efficiently. 

Even though both printers are “rated” 24ppm in mono and 6ppm in colour, a print job which took three minutes on the Lexmark printer took just 45 seconds on the TallyGenicom.

RESULTS
Network-traffic all but disappeared which left the Council employees happy and productive. 

NEW PRINTER TECHNOLOGY
Over the past 10 years the PCL emulation has seen many changes. With each new release more software code has been added to it to fit new applications. TallyGenicom, realising most applications run on Windows, developed a new emulation from scratch, TCPL. Free from unnecessary software and control codes, TCPL brings significant benefits to a busy network, the results speak for themselves.
