The Long
Road Home
by Rob Lamont
Repentance
involves
1. Recognising
that
we have sinned.
2. Taking
responsibility
for our sin.
3. Asking God
to forgive
us.
4. Asking God
to help
us not to do that sin again.
5. Seeking to
do what
is right rather than what is wrong.
Read the
following passage
1 John 1:8
"If we
say that we have not sinned, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is
not in our hearts. 9But if we tell God about our sins, he can always be
trusted to forgive us and take our sins away. 10If we say that we have
not sinned, we make God a liar, and his message is not in our hearts.
2:1
My children, I am writing this so that you will not sin. But if you do
sin, Jesus Christ always does the right thing, and he will speak to the
Father for us. 2Christ is the sacrifice that takes away our sins and
the
sins of all the world's people."

2. Why is it
so hard to
take responsibility for our actions and sins?
3. What must
we do to
be forgiven by God? Why does God forgive us?
4. The
following
Psalm (Spiritual song) was written by King David afer a time of major
sinning.
What guideline does it give to us to ask God for forgiveness?
51:4 Against you,
you only,
have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are
proved
right when you speak and justified when you judge.
51:5 Surely I was
sinful
at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
51:6 Surely you
desire truth
in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
51:10 Create in me a
pure
heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
51:11 Do not cast me
from
your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
51:12 Restore to me
the
joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
51:13 Then I will
teach
transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.
51:14 Save me from
bloodguilt,
O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your
righteousness.
51:15 O Lord, open
my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
